From the Archives: He Thought It Was a “Beer Belly”… It Was Diastasis Recti – Jim’s Story
About this episode
Every once in a while, we like to revisit an episode that continues to resonate with our community. This conversation with Jim is one of Kelly’s all-time favorites from Season 1 because his story reminds us that healing often begins by rethinking what strength really means.

Kelly Dean, MPT
Kelly has a Masters in Physical Therapy and focuses her career on Diastasis Recti and core related issues.Jim had spent more than 30 years strength training. As a Marine Corps veteran, lifelong athlete, former personal trainer, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, he believed he knew how to build a strong body.
Then one workout changed everything.
After noticing a strange "alien-like" bulge pushing out of his abdomen, Jim began searching for answers and eventually discovered he had diastasis recti. Like many men, he found very little information available and assumed surgery might be his only option.
In this encouraging conversation, Kelly and Jim discuss how learning to slow down, reconnect with his deep core muscles, and trust the rehab process completely changed the way he moves, trains, and feels. Jim shares how breathing, posture, and functional core connection helped relieve years of pain, flatten his abdomen, improve athletic performance, and give him a completely new understanding of strength.
Although this interview was originally recorded during Season 1, the lessons are just as relevant today. Whether you're struggling with diastasis recti, a persistent "beer belly," recurring injuries, or simply feel disconnected from your core, Jim's journey offers hope that healing is possible.
