The Journey to Overcoming the Obstacles to Start Pelvic Floor PT

In this episode of The Tummy Team Journey podcast, host Kelly Dean, founder of The Tummy Team, welcomes pelvic floor physical therapist Christina Trautman. The two discuss the common obstacles people face in seeking pelvic floor therapy, shedding light on why many delay care and how to overcome these barriers.

Why People Delay Pelvic Floor Therapy

  1. Trust and Vulnerability – Many hesitate to seek treatment due to the deeply personal nature of pelvic floor issues. Patients worry about finding a provider they can trust to validate their symptoms and create a safe space for healing.

  2. Shame and Normalization – Women often believe they should be able to recover from childbirth or aging without assistance. Many accept dysfunction as a normal part of life, comparing themselves to others instead of recognizing the potential for healing.

  3. Medical Dismissal – Many doctors fail to refer patients to pelvic floor therapy, dismissing their concerns or attributing them to weight or lifestyle choices. This discourages patients from seeking alternative solutions.

  4. Financial Concerns – While pelvic floor therapy can seem costly, the long-term investment prevents more expensive treatments like surgery. Additionally, conditions like incontinence lead to recurring costs (e.g., pads, medications).

  5. Waiting for the 'Right Time' – Many postpone therapy until they are "done having kids," believing treatment is futile if they plan more pregnancies. However, seeking care earlier can make subsequent pregnancies and postpartum recovery easier.

  6. Trauma and Emotional Barriers – Past trauma, whether major or minor, can create a subconscious fear of treatment. The body holds onto trauma, often manifesting as chronic pelvic issues. Kelly emphasizes that emotional responses during treatment are normal and healing happens gradually.

Where to Start if You're Not Ready for Therapy

  • Focus on Breathing – Deep, diaphragmatic breathing helps engage the core and pelvic floor, promoting relaxation and function.
  • Improve Posture – Small adjustments to daily posture can ease symptoms and build foundational strength.
  • Increase Awareness – Keeping a symptom journal can clarify the frequency and severity of issues, helping patients recognize patterns and progress.
  • Gentle Movement – Low-impact activities like walking and stretching support pelvic health.
  • Hydration and Nutrition – Proper water intake and a whole-food diet help maintain bowel and bladder health, reducing symptoms like constipation and urgency.

Key Takeaways

  • You’re not alone—many people struggle with pelvic floor dysfunction and delay treatment.
  • Seeking therapy sooner prevents worsening symptoms and makes recovery easier.
  • The right provider will create a safe, supportive space for healing.
  • Small daily changes, like breathing and posture, can start improving symptoms even before seeking professional help.

Kelly and Christina encourage listeners to take the first step—whether by learning more, booking a consultation, or simply becoming aware of their own needs. The episode closes with a reminder: investing in your body is always worth it.
