About this episode

In this episode of The Tummy Team Journey Podcast, Kelly Dean is joined by occupational therapist Mary Mello to explore how functional core and pelvic floor integration is transforming care for seniors — and reshaping how therapists serve their patients.

Headshot of Kelly Dean, MPT—founder of The Tummy Team and expert in functional core rehabilitation and pelvic floor therapy.

Kelly Dean, MPT

Kelly has a Masters in Physical Therapy and focuses her career on Diastasis Recti and core related issues.

A Therapist’s Transformation

Mary, an OT with 35 years of experience and a master’s in gerontology, shares how taking Kelly’s continuing education courses completely shifted her clinical focus. After attending two trainings through her skilled nursing network, Mary began incorporating core and pelvic floor strategies into her daily practice — and noticed immediate, meaningful results in her patients’ lives.

Core Connection in Everyday Care

Mary discusses how foundational strategies like posture alignment, belly breathing, and functional core engagement have changed her approach to everything from wheelchair evaluations to toileting independence. “Even the simple act of standing at the sink now includes intentional core activation,” she shares.

When Therapists Become Students

Kelly emphasizes her teaching philosophy: therapists must feel the work in their own bodies before they can effectively share it. Mary took this to heart — not only applying the techniques to her patients, but also to her own aging body and lifestyle. “I realized I wasn’t as strong as I used to be. Now I’m working on myself, too.”

The Power of Teaching Others

Mary recounts how she’s shared these techniques with physical therapy students, staff, and even family. From breathing patterns to abdominal splinting, she’s helping spread this knowledge across generations of caregivers and clinicians. “Now they call me the posture police,” she laughs, “and I’m proud of it.”

Personal Case Study: From Urgency to Empowerment

In a standout moment, Mary shares her own transformation using transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) and core rehab to address her bladder urgency and nocturia. After just a few weeks, her daytime urgency and nighttime wake-ups drastically improved — giving her back restful sleep and confidence. “It was life-changing.”

Key Takeaways for Seniors & Clinicians

  • Better Is Better: Even small improvements matter — especially in late-stage rehab.

  • You’re Never Too Old or Too Weak: Core recovery can start at any age or ability level.

  • Therapists Need Healing Too: When clinicians apply this work to themselves, everyone benefits.

  • Practical, Not Perfect: Posture, breath, and engagement don’t have to be flawless — they just need to be intentional.

Whether you’re a therapist, caregiver, or aging adult, this episode offers hope, tools, and inspiration to integrate strength into everyday life.
