Season 5 | Episode 2 | June 30, 2026

About this episode

After nearly two years of chronic back pain, hip dysfunction, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and even surgery, Jesika was running out of answers.

A former collegiate athlete, tennis instructor, and mother of three, she assumed her body would bounce back with the right treatment. But despite her determination and willingness to do the work, she continued to struggle with pain, compensation patterns, poor posture, and a growing sense of frustration.

Headshot of Kelly Dean, MPT—founder of The Tummy Team and expert in functional core rehabilitation and pelvic floor therapy.

Kelly has a Masters in Physical Therapy and focuses her career on Diastasis Recti and core related issues.

In this episode of The Tummy Team Journey Podcast, Jesika shares how a late-night internet search led her to The Tummy Team and a completely different approach to healing. Through learning about posture, breathing, functional core strength, and body awareness, she discovered that many of the symptoms she had been chasing were connected to a weak and disconnected core.

Jesika opens up about the emotional toll of feeling stuck, the relief of finally understanding what was happening in her body, and the confidence she gained as she returned to teaching tennis, parenting, and everyday life without fear. She also shares how something as simple as improving her posture, reconnecting to her breath, and using a splint for support helped her accomplish what years of appointments and treatments had not.

Kelly and Jesika discuss why so many active women miss the signs of core dysfunction, the importance of listening to your body's signals, and how empowering it can be to take ownership of your healing journey.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why chronic back and hip pain may be connected to functional core weakness
  • How posture and breathing influence strength, stability, and healing
  • The role of the transverse abdominis in supporting the entire body
  • How an abdominal splint can provide feedback and support during recovery
  • Why athletes and active moms are especially prone to compensation patterns
  • The connection between core function, confidence, and quality of life
  • How small daily habits can create lasting changes in the body
  • Why a strong core is about so much more than appearance or exercise

Jesika's story is a powerful reminder that healing isn't always about finding the next specialist or treatment. Sometimes the missing piece is learning how your body was designed to function—and giving it the support it needs to do what it was created to do.
