Exhale and Engage on the Effort for Fitness

The transverse abdominis engages fully on a forced exhalation. This allows the diaphragm (the roof of the core) to lift up out of the way and elongate the core so the tummy can draw in and compress (or support) your abdominal organs and spine. This lesson is going to review the coordination of your breathing that will best help you when you are working out.

Blow as you go. Instead of holding your breath and bracing or exhaling and tensing your core and then lifting. Think about exhaling as you move through the challenging part of the exercise. This can help with any kind of lifting but also is key when doing weight training exercises.
